THE NARRATIVE

A hidden natural stone forest labyrinth behind Shiwang Temple in Bau. Unique karst rock formations create winding paths through an ancient limestone garden that feels like stepping into another world.

HERITAGE & HISTORY

Paku Rock Maze Garden is one of Sarawak's most unexpected hidden gems and a must-visit nature attraction in the Bau district. Tucked behind the Shiwang Temple near Kampung Paku, this extraordinary natural stone labyrinth was largely unknown to outsiders until it gained attention around 2021 when local adventurers began sharing photos online. The site features a dense collection of weathered limestone karst pillars, some towering over 10 metres high, arranged in a natural maze-like formation that has been sculpted by millions of years of tropical erosion. Walking through the Paku Rock Maze feels like entering a fantasy film set. The narrow passages between the jagged limestone towers are flanked by moss-covered walls, dangling ferns, and twisting tree roots that grip the ancient stone. Shafts of dappled sunlight filter through the canopy above, creating an atmosphere that is at once mysterious and deeply peaceful. The formations here are geologically related to the broader Bau limestone belt, the same karst system that created Fairy Cave and Wind Cave, but the surface-level rock garden creates an entirely different experience. The maze is located directly behind Shiwang Temple, a Chinese Taoist temple that itself is worth a visit. Enter through the temple grounds and follow the trail markers behind the main building. The maze trail takes about 30-45 minutes to explore at a leisurely pace. Some passages are tight and require ducking or squeezing through, adding to the sense of adventure. Bring good walking shoes, water, and a camera. The trail is uneven but manageable for most fitness levels. There is no entry fee, but donations to the temple are appreciated. Visit in the morning for the best light. Combine with Fairy Cave, Wind Cave, and Tasik Biru for the ultimate Bau karst adventure itinerary. Paku Rock Maze Garden is Sarawak's secret stone forest.
