THE NARRATIVE

A dark, breezy cave system full of bats and fossils. The thrilling boardwalk through pitch-black passages and constant wind currents make this a raw adventure experience, far less crowded than nearby Fairy Cave.

HERITAGE & HISTORY

Wind Cave, or Lubang Angin in Malay, is one of the most thrilling adventure caves in Sarawak and a must-visit hidden gem in the Bau district. Located in the same limestone karst belt as Fairy Cave, Wind Cave offers a dramatically different underground experience -- darker, wilder, and refreshingly uncrowded. The cave gets its name from the strong, cool breezes that flow through its passages, created by multiple openings in the limestone hill that channel air currents through narrow tunnels. The moment you step inside Wind Cave, the temperature drops noticeably and the wind picks up. A well-built wooden boardwalk leads you through the cave system, winding past spectacular stalactite and stalagmite formations that have been growing for hundreds of thousands of years. The cave is significantly darker than Fairy Cave, and a good torch is essential. Colonies of fruit bats cling to the ceiling, and their rustling adds an atmospheric soundtrack to your exploration. The cave is also home to swiftlets whose nests are highly prized. One of Wind Cave's most fascinating features is its underground river, which you can hear rushing below the boardwalk in certain sections. The cave contains fossilised shells and coral, evidence that this area was once beneath an ancient sea. Geologists consider the Bau limestone formation to be around 60-70 million years old, making every step through Wind Cave a walk through deep geological time. Wind Cave is located about 3 km from Fairy Cave, making it easy to visit both on the same trip. The boardwalk circuit takes approximately 30-45 minutes. Bring a reliable torch and wear closed shoes. The cave is about 45 km from Kuching city. Entry is affordable and the experience is unforgettable. For anyone seeking a raw, uncrowded cave adventure in Sarawak, Wind Cave delivers an experience that rivals any show cave in Southeast Asia.
