HERITAGE & HISTORY
Susung Waterfall is one of the most breathtaking hidden gems in Sarawak and a must-visit waterfall adventure in the Padawan highlands near Kuching. Located in the remote Bengoh Dam valley, reaching this magnificent multi-tiered cascade is itself an adventure -- involving a scenic 20-minute boat ride across the emerald-green waters of Bengoh Dam, followed by a 30-minute trek through dense primary rainforest that feels genuinely prehistoric. The Bengoh Dam was completed in 2013, creating a massive reservoir that submerged several Bidayuh villages. The displaced communities relocated to higher ground, and the area around the dam has become an increasingly popular eco-tourism destination. Boat services are operated by local Bidayuh villagers, providing them with sustainable income while giving visitors access to some of Sarawak's most remote waterfalls. Susung Waterfall itself is a jaw-dropping sight. The water cascades over multiple tiers of smooth granite and limestone, dropping a total of approximately 25 metres into a series of natural plunge pools that are perfect for swimming. The lowest pool is deep, clear, and surrounded by massive boulders draped in moss and ferns. The jungle canopy overhead filters the sunlight into golden shafts, and the overall atmosphere is so primeval that visitors often describe it as having a Jurassic Park quality. To visit, drive to the Bengoh Dam jetty (about 60 km from Kuching, roughly 90 minutes), then arrange a boat with local operators. The total excursion takes about half a day. Bring swimwear, water shoes, sunscreen, and a waterproof bag. The water can be cold and refreshing. There is a small boat fee payable to local villagers. Susung Waterfall is Sarawak's most dramatic dam-and-waterfall combination experience, offering adventure, natural beauty, and community engagement in one unforgettable trip.
