HERITAGE & HISTORY

Bario Highlands is one of Southeast Asia's most extraordinary hidden gems and a must-visit destination in Sarawak for travellers seeking authentic indigenous culture and untouched natural beauty. Perched at approximately 1,000 metres above sea level in the remote Kelabit Highlands of northeastern Sarawak, Bario is accessible primarily by small Twin Otter aircraft from Miri -- a dramatic 50-minute flight over an endless carpet of primary rainforest that sets the tone for an experience unlike anything else in Borneo. The Kelabit people are one of Sarawak's smallest indigenous groups, numbering only around 6,000. They are renowned for their hospitality, their organic rice cultivation (Bario rice is considered the finest in Malaysia and commands premium prices), and their remarkably egalitarian social structure. In Bario, you will stay in genuine longhouse homestays, sharing meals of Bario rice, jungle vegetables, wild boar, and fresh river fish with your Kelabit hosts. The experience is profoundly intimate and transformative. The highland landscape is breathtaking. Emerald-green rice paddies stretch across the valley floor, surrounded by misty forested mountains. The cool climate, averaging 18-25 degrees Celsius, is a welcome relief from the lowland heat. Bario is also a gateway to ancient megalithic sites -- mysterious stone structures scattered through the jungle that predate written history in Borneo. Multi-day treks from Bario to neighbouring Ba Kelalan or Pa Lungan pass through some of the most pristine jungle on Earth. The annual Bario Food Festival, usually held in July, celebrates Kelabit cuisine and culture and attracts visitors from around the world. Flights to Bario are limited and weather-dependent, so book early and build flexibility into your schedule. Bring warm layers for cool nights, good walking shoes, and an open mind. Bario is Sarawak's ultimate off-grid highland escape.
