THE NARRATIVE

A beautiful, rarely visited waterfall near the Bario Highlands, surrounded by ancient forests and cool mountain air. One of the most remote and rewarding waterfall experiences in all of Sarawak.

HERITAGE & HISTORY

Pa Ramapuh Waterfall is one of the most remote and least-visited hidden gems in Sarawak, a must-visit waterfall adventure for intrepid travellers exploring the Kelabit Highlands near Bario. Nestled deep within ancient primary montane forest at approximately 900 metres elevation, this stunning cascade is surrounded by some of the oldest and most biodiverse jungle remaining in Borneo. The waterfall is rarely visited, even by the Kelabit communities who live in the area, making every trip here feel like a genuine discovery. The trek to Pa Ramapuh Waterfall begins from the Bario plateau and typically takes 1.5 to 2 hours through dense highland forest. The trail passes through towering moss-covered trees festooned with orchids, pitcher plants, and bird's nest ferns. The forest floor is carpeted in a thick layer of decomposing leaves, and the air is cool and fragrant with the scent of wild ginger and damp earth. A local Kelabit guide is essential -- the trail is not marked and easy to lose in the dense undergrowth. The waterfall itself drops approximately 20 metres over a smooth rock face into a deep, dark pool surrounded by massive boulders and overhanging vegetation. The water is remarkably cold at this altitude and crystal clear. The sound of the cascade echoing off the surrounding forest creates a natural amphitheatre effect that is deeply peaceful. Some visitors describe the experience as spiritual -- being this deep in ancient forest, this far from civilisation, with only the sound of falling water and birdsong. To visit, you must first fly to Bario from Miri, then arrange a local guide through your homestay host. The trek is moderate to challenging. Bring trekking shoes, rain gear, water, and snacks. Pack warm layers as the highland climate is significantly cooler. Pa Ramapuh Waterfall is Sarawak's reward for those willing to venture to the absolute edge of accessible Borneo.
