HERITAGE & HISTORY

Serian Weekend Market is one of Sarawak's most authentic food heritage hidden gems and a must-visit destination for anyone passionate about local cuisine, wild produce, and the incredible biodiversity of Borneo's edible plants. Located in Serian town, approximately 65 km from Kuching (about a one-hour drive), this bustling market comes alive every Saturday and Sunday morning when Bidayuh and Iban villagers from surrounding kampungs descend with their freshest harvests. What makes Serian Market truly special is the extraordinary range of jungle produce on display. You will find wild ferns (midin and paku), bamboo shoots, various species of wild ginger flowers, edible flowers, jungle mushrooms, and an astonishing variety of tropical fruits -- many of which have no English names and are entirely unknown outside Borneo. During durian season (typically June to August), the market becomes a durian lover's paradise, with multiple varieties of local durian sold at a fraction of Kuching prices. The prepared food section is equally remarkable. Local vendors sell traditional Bidayuh and Iban specialties including pansoh (chicken cooked in bamboo), various sambals made with wild chillies, fermented fish, sticky rice wrapped in leaves, and freshly made kuih (traditional cakes). The market also sells live chickens, freshwater fish, and wild game that reflects the hunting traditions of the local communities. Serian itself is known as the Durian Capital of Sarawak, and the town celebrates the annual Serian Durian Festival, typically held in June or July. The market is housed in a modern covered structure with surrounding open-air stalls that spill into the adjacent streets. Arrive early, by 6:30 AM, for the best selection as popular items sell out fast. Bring cash and reusable bags. Serian Weekend Market is Sarawak's most genuine wild food experience -- a living encyclopedia of Borneo's edible biodiversity.
