THE NARRATIVE
A quiet border town in northern Sarawak with beautiful unspoiled beaches, mangrove forests, and virtually zero tourist crowds. The kind of place where you can walk for kilometres on sand without seeing another soul.
HERITAGE & HISTORY
Lawas is one of Sarawak's most underrated coastal hidden gems, a must-visit destination for travellers seeking genuinely unspoiled beaches and the tranquillity of a small Malaysian border town that tourism forgot. Located in the far northeastern corner of Sarawak, wedged between Sabah and Brunei, Lawas is a place that most travellers only pass through on their way somewhere else -- and that is exactly what has preserved its quiet charm and pristine coastline. The beaches around Lawas are strikingly beautiful in their emptiness. Long stretches of golden-brown sand meet calm South China Sea waters, backed by coconut palms and casuarina trees. Pantai Lawas (Lawas Beach) and the surrounding coastal areas offer the kind of solitary beachcombing experience that has become almost impossible to find in more developed parts of Malaysia. On weekdays, you might walk for an hour and encounter nobody. The sunsets here, with the silhouette of distant islands and the occasional fishing boat, are extraordinary. The Lawas area also features extensive mangrove forests that are home to proboscis monkeys, monitor lizards, and diverse birdlife. Local fishermen can be hired for informal mangrove boat tours, offering a chance to explore these rich estuarine ecosystems. The town itself has a pleasant, sleepy quality -- a handful of coffee shops, a lively morning market, and friendly residents who are genuinely surprised and delighted to meet visitors. Lawas is accessible by MASwings flights from Miri or Kota Kinabalu, or by road from Brunei or Sabah. The town has basic but comfortable accommodation. The Lawas District is also home to the Lun Bawang indigenous community, known for their traditional rice wine and highland culture. Bring your own entertainment and an appreciation for slow living. Lawas is Sarawak's ultimate escape from everything.
