THE NARRATIVE
A warm, authentic Bidayuh longhouse experience near the Indonesian border, offering traditional hospitality, stunning valley views, and an intimate glimpse into one of Borneo's most welcoming indigenous communities.
HERITAGE & HISTORY
Mongkos Bidayuh Longhouse is one of Sarawak's most authentic and least-commercialised cultural heritage hidden gems, a must-visit destination for travellers seeking genuine indigenous hospitality near the Indonesian border. Unlike the more well-known Annah Rais, Mongkos receives very few tourists, which means your visit here will be a truly personal and intimate encounter with Bidayuh culture in its most natural setting. The Mongkos longhouse is situated in a dramatic valley in the Bau-Lundu border region, surrounded by forested mountains and terraced gardens. The setting is spectacularly scenic, with mist often clinging to the surrounding peaks in the early morning. The longhouse follows traditional Bidayuh architectural principles, elevated on hardwood stilts with a long communal gallery (tanju) running its entire length. Families maintain individual living quarters (bilik) opening onto this shared space, which serves as a social hub for community gatherings, celebrations, and daily conversation. What makes Mongkos special is the warmth and genuineness of the welcome. Visitors are treated not as customers but as guests. You will be invited to share meals, try tuak (rice wine), learn about traditional farming practices, and hear stories passed down through generations. The village elders can share oral histories of the headhunting era and the community's transition to Christianity. The surrounding jungle offers excellent birding and hiking opportunities, with trails leading to waterfalls and border ridge viewpoints. Mongkos is approximately 100 km from Kuching, requiring a drive through increasingly rural and scenic countryside. The final stretch of road may require a 4WD vehicle depending on conditions. Arrange your visit through Sarawak tourism networks or directly through community contacts. Bring gifts for your hosts -- sugar, coffee, or children's supplies are always appreciated. Mongkos is Sarawak's most heartfelt longhouse experience.
