THE NARRATIVE
The jumping-off point for accessing remote Iban longhouses along the mighty Rejang River. Kapit town itself has rugged frontier charm, and the longhouse experiences upriver are genuine Borneo adventures.
HERITAGE & HISTORY
Kapit is one of Sarawak's most important cultural heritage gateways and a must-visit hidden gem for adventurers seeking authentic Iban longhouse experiences along the mighty Rajang River, the longest river in Malaysia. This rugged interior town, accessible primarily by express boat from Sibu (a thrilling 2.5-hour journey upriver through dense jungle), serves as the launching point for some of the most genuine indigenous encounters remaining in Borneo. The town of Kapit itself has a wonderfully rough-around-the-edges frontier quality. Wooden shophouses line the riverfront, longboats and express boats jostle at the busy jetty, and the daily rhythm is punctuated by the comings and goings of Iban, Kayan, and Kenyah people from upriver longhouses who come to town for supplies. Fort Sylvia, built by Charles Brooke in 1880, still stands on the riverfront and now houses a small museum that chronicles the area's colonial and indigenous history. But the real reason to visit Kapit is to venture further upriver. From Kapit, you can arrange longboat transport to remote Iban longhouses along the Rejang and its tributaries -- the Baleh, the Sungai, and the Mujong. These longhouse visits are not tourist shows; they are genuine encounters with communities that still practise traditional agriculture, weaving, and ceremonies. You will sleep on the longhouse floor, share meals of rice, jungle vegetables, and river fish, and drink tuak until the stories start flowing. Kapit is reached by express boat from Sibu (departures from 5:45 AM). There are several basic hotels in town. Arrange longhouse visits through the Kapit Resident's Office or local tour operators. Permits may be required for travel beyond Kapit. Bring an adventurous spirit, modest clothing, gifts for hosts, and plenty of cash. Kapit is Sarawak's river frontier -- the real Borneo experience that most visitors dream about.
