Melano Bay Beach at Telok Melano is a scenic coastal gem near the Indonesian border in western Sarawak, where a sheltered bay of clean sand meets clear waters against a backdrop of forested hills. This Borneo beach destination has gained popularity in recent years partly due to the availability of ATV rides that take visitors along the coast and through the surrounding countryside, adding an element of adventure to the beach experience. The bay is naturally protected from strong currents, making the swimming conditions generally safe and comfortable. The beach sits adjacent to a small Malay fishing village whose residents are known for their hospitality and willingness to share local knowledge about the area. The surrounding landscape is lush and green, with the hills behind the village covered in a mix of secondary forest and smallholder plantations. Telok Melano is a small coastal settlement located near the extreme western tip of Sarawak, close to the border with Indonesia's West Kalimantan province. The village and its bay occupy a strategic position along a stretch of coastline that has been navigated by fishermen, traders, and seafarers for centuries. The sheltered nature of the bay has historically made it a safe anchorage point for boats travelling along this exposed section of the South China Sea coast. The Malay fishing community at Telok Melano has maintained a traditional coastal lifestyle that revolves around the sea, the catch, and the rhythms of the tides. The village is relatively isolated, accessible by a rural road from Sematan that winds through farmland and forest. This isolation has preserved the authentic character of both the village and its beach, keeping large-scale development at bay while allowing small-scale tourism initiatives to develop organically. The ATV activity that has become associated with Melano Bay Beach was introduced by local operators who recognised the potential of the scenic coastal terrain for guided rides. The ATV routes take riders along the beach, through coconut groves, and along forest trails, offering an energetic way to experience the landscape. This activity has helped put Telok Melano on the map for a younger generation of domestic tourists seeking active outdoor experiences. Melano Bay is also the most practical departure point for informal boat trips to Tanjung Datu National Park when the official Sematan boat service is not operating. Local fishermen sometimes agree to transport small groups along the coast to the park, offering an authentic and memorable approach to one of Sarawak's most pristine Borneo beach destinations. The drive from Kuching to Telok Melano takes approximately two and a half to three hours via Lundu and Sematan. The road is paved but narrow in sections.
