Bako National Park, Sarawak

THE NARRATIVE

Telok Pandan Kecil is one of the most stunning and hard-earned beach destinations in all of Sarawak, a secluded crescent of golden sand set within a dramatic amphitheatre of sandstone cliffs inside Bako National Park. Reaching this hidden Borneo beach requires approximately one hour of jungle trekking through primary rainforest, crossing boardwalks over mangrove swamps, and descending steep cliff paths -- an adventure that makes the moment of arrival all the more exhilarating. The beach is small and intimate, enclosed on three sides by weathered sandstone cliffs that have been carved into extraordinary shapes by wind and rain erosion over millions of years. The sand is fine and golden, the water is typically calm and clear within the sheltered cove, and the sense of isolation is profound. Wild proboscis monkeys, silver leaf monkeys, and long-tailed macaques are frequently spotted along the trail and sometimes on the beach itself. Sea stacks and rock formations frame the cove, creating an almost prehistoric landscape that feels removed from the modern world. Telok Pandan Kecil is regularly cited as one of the most beautiful hidden beaches in Borneo, and it thoroughly deserves the reputation among those willing to earn it.

HERITAGE & HISTORY

Telok Pandan Kecil lies within Bako National Park, Sarawak's oldest national park, which was established in 1957 at the tip of the Muara Tebas Peninsula where the Bako and Kuching rivers meet the South China Sea. The park protects 2,727 hectares of some of the most diverse and accessible rainforest in all of Borneo, including seven distinct vegetation types ranging from mangrove swamp to kerangas heath forest and mixed dipterocarp forest. The dramatic sandstone formations that characterise the park's coastline, including the cliffs surrounding Telok Pandan Kecil, are composed of sedimentary layers laid down in a shallow sea approximately 20 million years ago during the Miocene epoch. The erosion of these ancient sandstone layers has created Bako's most iconic features -- towering sea stacks, arched rock formations, overhanging cliffs stained with red and orange iron oxides, and the secluded coves and beaches that punctuate the coastline. Telok Pandan Kecil is considered by many to be the finest of these cove beaches, its crescent of golden sand perfectly framed by the surrounding cliff amphitheatre. The trek to Telok Pandan Kecil follows one of Bako's well-marked trail systems, passing through dense lowland rainforest where proboscis monkeys, bearded pigs, monitor lizards, and dozens of bird species can be observed. The trail includes sections of boardwalk over mangrove areas and some steep descents that require reasonable fitness. The journey is part of the reward -- the transition from deep jungle to the sudden reveal of the beach below is one of the most memorable moments in any Sarawak national park visit. Bako National Park is accessed by a 20-minute boat ride from the Bako village jetty, which is about 37 kilometres from Kuching. Day trips are popular, but staying overnight at the park accommodation allows time to explore multiple trails and beaches. Telok Pandan Kecil is a must-visit Sarawak beach for anyone seeking the intersection of jungle adventure and pristine coastal beauty.
