Telok Limau, meaning 'Lime Bay' in Malay, is located within the coastal zone adjacent to Bako National Park on the Muara Tebas Peninsula. The peninsula's dramatic coastline is composed of sandstone formations dating back approximately 20 million years to the Miocene epoch, when this area was a shallow marine environment. Over geological time, tectonic uplift raised these ancient seabed formations above the waves, and subsequent erosion by wind, rain, and sea has sculpted them into the dramatic cliffs, sea stacks, and secluded coves that define this stretch of the Sarawak coast today. The sandstone at Telok Limau is layered in distinctive bands of red, orange, and cream, the colours created by varying concentrations of iron oxide minerals deposited during the original sedimentary process millions of years ago. These coloured cliff faces are among the most photogenic geological features on the Borneo coast, and the contrast between the warm-toned rock and the turquoise sea below is visually arresting. The trek to Telok Limau is one of the more demanding trails in the Bako area, requiring good fitness and several hours of walking through undulating rainforest terrain.
